EARLY LOCAL QUAKERS
If you have Quaker ancestors who lived in Rimington, Sawley, Twiston and Rathmell in the second half of the 17th century onwards, then they may feature in this article about the leading Quakers of that time written by The Rev’d. Enid Briggs for inclusion in this archive section of the Rimington village website.
She has compiled an account of the main families of the district practising Quakerism using wills and parish records, but most of all from the records the Quakers kept themselves.
They suffered at the verdicts of the courts; the hands of the servants of landlords, and (oh, dear!) clergy of Gisburn Church in their pursuit of payment of their lawful rights in tithes but which wasn't recognised as such by the Quakers. Consequently they were spied and informed upon, stripped of assets (usually exceeding the value of the tithe) and, in some instances, imprisoned for an unspecified period of time for refusing to take oaths.
